Why AI?

As the planet continues to warm, climate change impacts are worsening. In 2016, there were 772 weather and disaster events, triple the number that occurred in 1980. Twenty percent of species currently face extinction, and that number could rise to 50 percent by 2100.

But we have a new tool to help us better manage the impacts of climate change and protect the planet: artificial intelligence (AI).

In India, AI has helped farmers get 30 percent higher groundnut yields per hectare by providing information on preparing the land, applying fertilizer and choosing sowing dates. In Norway, AI helped create a flexible and autonomous electric grid, integrating more renewable energy.

AI continues to help to monitor ecosystems and wildlife and their interactions, drinking water quality, manage residential water use, detect underground leaks in drinking water supply systems.

About the competition

Ethiopia is one among very few countries that are severely affected by climate change. In order to combat this issue, Addis Ababa University’s Industry Linkage and Technology Transfer (UILTT) in collaboration with Google Developers Group Addis (GDG Addis) have come up with the idea of hosting an AI competition for climate change.

This competition will involve only University/College Students in Ethiopia. The competition is open and free to all interested individuals regardless of gender. Their team should be diverse with a minimum of two people from different discipline.

Scope of the competition

In order to combat climate change Ethiopia has launched the Climate Resilient Green Economy Strategy. This was done in two phases. The Green Economy Strategy which was launched in 2010 and the Climate Resilient Strategy which was launched as the National Adaptation Plan in 2019.
